Having full control of the river and the access to the Tyrrhenian Sea provided the Romans with a chance to conquer the Mediterranean and to expand their borders.
The Boarium Forum (Rome oldest market place), the Port Tibernius and the Tiber Island experienced intense commercial activity thanks to their prime location. Bridges were built to connect the banks of the Boarium to the one of Trastevere transforming the all area into a busy multicultural district that housed Syrian, Egyptian and Jewish communities since 168BC.
Kids can test their truth-telling by sticking their hand into the Mouth of Truth “Bocca della Verità”. According to legend, the Bocca della Verita closes shut over the hand of anyone who tells a lie. So far, no hands have been lost at the Bocca della Verita, and it's fun to do.  “Are you ready to put your hand in his mouth? If you haven’t told any lies, everything will be fine…otherwise, the Mouth will know it and chop off your hand! But don’t worry this is only the threat of ancient Romans. He probably won’t like the taste for your hand anyway”.

Underground Rome

Details: Rome has been the Capitol City of the largest western Empire from the 1st Century BC to the 3rd Century AD. Almost abandoned during the Dark Ages its buildings were left with no maintenance and ruined down: earthquakes, water floods, time itself covered the ancient buildings under 20 or even 30 feet of sediments, bricks, marbles. Medieval and Renaissance Roma has been rebuilt over the ruins of the roman buildings, sometimes recycling the old structures but most of the times just building on top ignoring what was underground. Today hundreds of crypts, houses, and temples are still perfectly preserved underground. It is a unique treasure not open to everyone, but a visit to Rome that does not include at least one of these sites would be uncompleted. This tour provides a thematic exploration of the hidden and fascinating, subterranean levels of Rome. We will descend into the underground below the 12th century Basilica of San Clemente to discover the rests of an early medieval church built on the remains of a 1st century Roman public buildings and private houses (domus). We will also explore a temple of Mithras, a Persian God who probably migrated back to Italy with soldiers and slaves.

  1. Dear Valerie,
I just wanted to let you know what a marvellous time Tom and I had with you for our two and a half days in Rome. Your knowledge of Roman art and history brought everything to life for us. We had such limited time and so much that we wanted to see and do, I can't even imagine doing it without your help. I am definitely going to recommend your service to our friends. Thank you again so much for making our time in Rome so special.
    Lucy and Tom.

  2. During our first trip to Italy and Rome we spent 2½ amazing days with Valeria guiding us through the Eternal City. Our tours were both interesting and inspiring and we were shown parts of the city we would never have found had we tried to see Rome on our own. Valeria conducted our tours professionally, but at a personal level, meeting our needs as a family and catering very well for both my husband and I as well as our 3 daughters aged 12, 10 and 8 years. Valeria has a wealth of knowledge on Rome and its history and is able to convey that knowledge with passion and enthusiasm at varying levels to keep both adults and children interested. We would definitely book tours with Valeria again and have since recommend her tours to friends who have enjoyed similar experiences to ours.

  3. If you want to experience Rome, not just see Rome, Rome4u tour is the one. Valerie, our tour guide, was great! Mom, Dad and three kids, ages 6 through 17 had a great time. Valerie took us through the Roman Forum and the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, St Peter Basilica and the Vatican. We had lunch in a little sidewalk restaurant in the Jewish Ghetto where we had the best pizza ever. She even did a couple of hours more than her booked time which was amazing of her.
Thank you Valerie, you were wonderful.

  4. Hi Valerie,
I would like to thank you for your time & patience taking us through a very informative tour of Rome. My apologies that we had to rush back from the Vatican museum the second evening since we wanted to change our train bookings.
We would certainly remember to recommend you in case any of our friends visit Rome in the future. If you ever visit Singapore, please write to us. We are not very good guides but will try to do our best to take you around Singapore J
I am attaching our photograph together as a memoir.
    Best Regards,
    Rajeev Lochan

  5. Hi Val, usually in the past we would stay with relatives so Rome visit would be only a day or few hours looking at the monuments, wherelse we both enjoyed the night walk we did with you as we could get the history behind it too, although I can't remember everything. Will have to allocate more time next time I come. Hopefully one day you will come over to Australia and visit here. Keep in touch.
    Ciao Sina
